to know a town

There are a few things I need to know about a town before I can claim familiarity. The location and hours of all thrift stores, for example. Or the best place to take a dog for a walk (not because I have a dog, but because I like to take myself for a walk in places that might require dodging dog-poo obstacles and would hopefully also involve interactions with quadrupeds). But of just as much importance is finding the best burger joint in town. The journey began last night.

The Trapper is a bar/restaurant with a pleasant enough atmosphere (right up until 9pm on Thursdays when the karaoke apparently gets going). Once a week they offer up a bacon cheese burger with fries for $6. Even the seriously penny-pinched like myself can afford that kind of a deal on occasion, but it's the requisite beer that really gets you. Beer is well overpriced in this part of the world. You'd think it was made from crude oil.

The service was so-so, the company pleasant, the fries delicious. But the burger was a bit dry, and took far longer to appear than expected. The search continues.

New favorite: The Riverhouse. Also known as the Heavy Metal Bar. Tiny little joint, extremely loud (but not extremely bad . . . ) heavy metal playing, hockey game on the big screen. A very good burger.

Not necessarily the greatest, but worth a mention: The Tuesday night bison burger deal at the Rockwater. Something like $4.25 for the burger. Can't compete with Jackson's Cowboy Steakhouse $5 [incredible] burger and beer deal, but I'll take what I can get.

Canyon's Edge. It was okay. Not sold on the atmosphere. Or the burger for that matter.
